Augmented Reality Tales of War and Peace (ARTWP) is an 18-month augmented reality (AR) artistic co-creation project between partners from Roskilde in Denmark (WoWiWo), Lviv in Ukraine (Lviv Municipal Library), Cosenza in Italy (Associazione Oltrezona) and Beaugency in France (les fous de bassan !).
The next stage of the project takes place in France, in Beaugency and Bourges, from November 28th to December 9th, 2023.
Three public events open the creative process:
– Wednesday 29 November 2023, 8.30 pm, Théâtre le Puits-Manu, Beaugency (45): meeting between the ARTWP team and the Balgentian public, collection of testimonies
– Friday 8 December 2023, 3 pm, Place Etienne Dolet, Bourges (18): presentation of works in progress in the public space
– Saturday 9 December 2023, 3 pm, Place du Martroi, Beaugency (45): presentation of works in progress in the public space
The 4 partner structures work in small or medium-sized cities, all far from the capitals. Although they have often collaborated with each other on art projects over the past 23 years, they agreed – in reaction to the current war in Ukraine – that there was an urgent need to work, for the first time, on a joint project in which all partners would not only reflect on this specific war, but also to the very concept of and our shared ambition for peace.
ARTWP is conceived as a digital art development project, in which stories are collected from those who are – or have been – in the midst of war, as well as those who see the war from the ‘outside’. During 4 workshops of 2 weeks in each region, the stories collected will be developed in the form of augmented reality works, with 12 experienced artists, 12 young volunteer artists and several hundred local citizens working together using augmented reality, text, music, animation, visual art, video and sound. The works will be placed in the main squares or public spaces of the four regions. The public will therefore be invited – with the help of our geolocated augmented reality application – to discover, with the help of their smartphone or tablet, these works on the abomination of war, on the need for a better understanding of the human being.
The war, as we all know, is not over yet, but we still have our weapons – our words and our art – in our hands, in our hearts and in our souls. It has never been more important than today to meet around our common humanity. And it is precisely in such situations that art can play not only an important role but, hopefully, a pivotal one.

The project is supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme (other ongoing support) and runs from 1 April 2023 to the end of September 2024 (18 months). All the actions of les fous de bassan are supported by the City of Beaugency and the Loiret Department.

The first ARTWP preparatory meeting was held on 13th and 14th of June 2023 at Byens Hus (The City House) in Roskilde, Denmark, with the ARTWP Steering Committee, the WoWiWo team and the three Danish artists.
